INITIAL PROJECT IDEA_

Wanting to protect and contribute to promoting and modernizing this endanger culture that Breton culture is, it’s a delicate task that requires a lot of knowledge about the culture in itself which include history, arts, and language for instances to be accurate as possible and not make more prejudices to it. Indeed by working in a minority culture with an unofficial status I’m directly getting politically engaged which has a lot of responsibility. This fact coupled with the complexity of translating the idea of dying culture under the prism of various factors such as French cultural soft oppression, I decided to start this journey by approaching the sad observation that only 5,5 % of the Bretons speak Breton which is a big impact on the cultural transmission. The result is that most Bretons nowadays would identify themself as Bretons more by the land than the arts, folklore, or history. This observation has made me question the link between language and cultural transmission, language and identity, land and identity as well as human and environment as cultural transmitters. So I have decided to work on what I would call: Identity and lands when the lands are the main daily cultural transmitter. Through this concept, I want to explore the relationship between humans and lands and how they influence each other by looking through historical monuments, exterior design, as well as the local fauna and flora, and ground composition which I will use to create my own ecological materials - challenge of mine during this project. I want at least 50% of my design process and final outcome to use recycled, thrift, or any ecological resources. Techniques that I would like to experiment with knitting, printing, plaster and creating a mixture between them which could lead to textured material or visual outcome.
